At yesterday's 11th annual Visual Effects Society Awards, Pixar's Brave got some much deserved awards recognition, taking four of the prestigious awards home from the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton.
The acclaimed studio's thirteenth feature film has received only a fraction of the awards recognition Pixar's previous films have garnered, with most awards going to either fellow Disney stablemate Wreck-It Ralph or Laika's ParaNorman - although Brave did manage to nab the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. So it's nice to see the great film get some recognition in one category all are agreed upon the excellence of: it's animation and look.
Brave won awards for Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture, Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature Motion Picture for Merida, Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature Motion Picture for the film's forest and Outstanding FX and Simulation Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture. The Scottish fairytale won every animated feature award the VES has and it's a huge show of approval for the film's magnificent breakthroughs in the rendering of hair and textures.
On the live-action visual effects side of things, Rhythm & Hues' superb VFX on Life of Pi also won four awards, including Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture for Richard Parker - check out our interview with Life of Pi animation director Erik-Jan de Boer here. Marvel's The Avengers also won two awards and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey won one.
