UPDATED - Disney at CinemaCon: Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, Star Wars, Tomorrowland and More!

CinemaCon has been going on today in Las Vegas, and the biggest film studios around have a presence there - included, obviously, is Disney and their many exciting subsidiaries. Here's some of the cool news stories to come out of the event:

It's only mildly intriguing, because we'd already heard strong speculation from several sources, but Disney and Pixar have confirmed that Pete Docter's inside-the-mind film is called Inside Out and scheduled for a US release date of 19th June, 2015 (which they released at CinemaCon last year) - the UK release date is currently 7th August, 2015. Now, is this the upcoming Pixar film that Michael Giacchino's scoring?

In other Pixar news, the studio apparently screened a very brief clip from next year's The Good Dinosaur - directed by Up co-director Bob Peterson, co-directed by Partly Cloudy director Peter Sohn, and scored by Thomas Newman - which drew some rather enthusiastic praise from /Film's Peter Scritetta. Closer on the horizon though, an unfinished cut of their summer release, Monsters University, is being screened right now!

Note, not an official poster.

Although many - including me - have been saying that it seems very unlikely that Disney's first Star Wars film would be ready for a 2015 release, the Mouse House seem adamant that it will be, saying that a new Star Wars will be released every summer, starting with the J.J. Abrams-directed Episode VII in two years' time. They added that the releases will alternate between sequel trilogy films and standalone pictures (presumably including the Yoda and Han Solo films we heard rumours of).

So, lots of cool stuff from Disney-distributed films, but what of Disney's own legacy? Well, there hasn't been a peep from Frozen as of yet. It's getting beyond ridiculous now, the film is due out this winter and we've heard very, very little about it - and seen even less.

Tom Hanks in character as Walt Disney for Saving
Mr. Banks
.

Footage was shown from Angelina Jolie-starring Maleficent though, and from Gore Verbisnki/Jerry Bruckheimer's The Lone Ranger, alongside a few seconds of Saving Mr. Banks (which features Tom Hanks as the first on-screen portrayal of Walt Disney) and a logo for Brad Bird's Tomorrowland.

UPDATE - 17/04/2013, 21:59 (GMT): Following the full screening of Monsters University (not the final cut of the film, but a full version nonetheless), there is a lot of Pixar love being bandied about: "smart, funny," and full of "surprising turns" are just some of the praise the film's receiving. Check out some prominent bloggers' tweets about the film below:

The final trailer for The Lone Ranger also debuted at the convention, and is now online. There's a lot of scepticism surrounding this one, but I personally think it has a lot of potential. The Pirates of the Caribbean similarities are evident - along with a bit of Zorro in there too - and it's certainly darker and more visually striking than Disney's usual live-action fare. Check out the trailer, via Yahoo! Movie Trailers, above.

Finally (for now anyway), Pixar also rolled out the official Facebook page for Inside Out - check it out here.

UPDATE - 18/04/2013, 22:30 (GMT): Disney apparently screened part of Iron Man 3, brief clips of Thor: The Dark WorldCaptain America Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, a bit from The Muppets... Again!, a teensy bit from Frozen and a few other bits and pieces.

Young Raffey Cassidy will play robot girl Athena in Brad Bird/Damon Lindelof's
Tomorrowland.

Also, to coincide with CinamCon, THR reports that Raffey Cassidy (Dark Shadows) has signed on to play a young robot girl in Tomorrowland. This corroborates the previous details about the plot that we'd heard, implying that Cassidy's character is Athena (more here). This is shaping up to be one damn exciting film.

~

We'll update this post with images and more stories as and when any more exciting Disney revelations emerge - keep your eyes peeled for Marvel details and, hopefully, some Frozen stuff in the next couple of hours. Until then: what do you think of what has been revealed, and what do you wish had been revealed as well?

Well, the Pixar news is (obviously, if you've learned anything about me... :D) my favorite news. I'm so glad that the critics are reacting well to MU, even though I love quoting how Walt Disney (who is, in my mind, one of the greatest entertainers EVER) didn't care about entertaining the critics. But hopefully if the critics like it, the general public will, too. These Twitter reactions are making me even more excited. WHY IS JUNE 21 SO FAR AWAY?!

Speaking of Walt Disney, I love that picture of Tom Hanks dressed as Disney. Tom Hanks is one of my fave actors, and Walt Disney was AMAZING, so I think it's a great picture.

Why don't I get to go to CinemaCon? JK!

  2. Sure, critics aren't the most important thing in the world, but it's always kinda sad when they don't react well to a Pixar film - hopefully this will get rid of any Cars 2-ill feeling for good!

  3. You would think...

  4. The Lone Ranger looks like a lot of fun, I'm really liking the new trailer. Even if the end looks to be a massive Toy story 3 rip-off.

About Star Wars : a new film each summer, until when ? Surely at some point they're gonna out of spin-off ideas. That seems like an odd statement from Disney.

About the Pixar stuff : it's all good. I wish we learned more things about The Good Dinosaur. Maybe soon...

  5. Haha, yeah, certainly a bit of a mish-mash of other films!

I imagine they're chasing up every possible avenue right now, trying to get it to a Marvel-sized operation where there's a big universe of interlinked films. But yeah, I can't see the model lasting beyond about 2020.

Hopefully, as we get nearer MU's release, the teaser for The Good Dinosaur will be up soon!

A few thoughts about these news:

First, I'm incredibly excited for the Star Wars news coming from 2015 to 2019. Not only for the main trilogy but I think that the spin-off projects have great potential too. Also, I thought that they probably won't have a new Star Wars for 2015 but Disney seems pretty sure about so brace yourselves for an epic May 2015 when Star Wars VII and The Avengers 2 land in theaters.

Also, as always, the Pixar news are great. Hopefully we'll see a teaser for The Good Dinosaur in front of MU. Speaking of which, I'm very happy that is getting a lot of positive response from the audience and critics. The only downside is that when it arrives in theaters, people will be saying "Pixar is finally back" and other nonsense.

The Lone Ranger looks fun but I still not very excited for that one. The last Pirates was kind of disappointing so I'll wait and see how this new project fares.

My only complaint is that no news regarding WDAS whatsoever were made. Aside from showing some seconds from Frozen, we not know absolutely anything else about it. They already show some seconds from The Good Dinosaur but there's not even a teaser for a film that's actually coming this year? Come on Disney, you'll been heavily promoting Planes (a film I'm still having trouble warming up to) but nothing for the film from your main studio (not even a poster or official images)? Also, you confirmed The Inside Out but nothing on Big Hero Six? I only wish Disney will treat WDAS with the same respect as they treat Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm. After all, this is the studio that started it all for the company.

Hopefully we'll see a teaser and more news when MU arrives in June. If this movie is not successful at the Box Office, it will be entirely Disney's fault for very bad advertising.

I'm mildly interested in Frozen, but maybe I would be more so if I knew more about it! Too bad that Disney's focusing on their "spin-off" instead of their all-new story. I still call Planes a rip-off.

I agree with you. Some people might only pay attention to what the critics say, and if the critics don't like the film, then those people might not even give it a chance.

    Very excited!

  9. The last Pirates was a more Disneyish endeavour than the previous team. But, yeah, it majorly sucked.

As long as they don't do a Jar-Jar spin-off, I'm onboard with all the projects
