The LEGO Movie 2: Everything is Announced

The LEGO Movie 2 is no more. Fear not though, because the film is simply undergoing a minor title change. It will now be known as the more meta The LEGO Movie Sequel. It was also announced that directors of the first film Chris Miller and Phil Lord won't return at the helm, as they probably are overwhelmed by other directing projects; Rob Schrab will replace them for the sequel.
Miller and Lord are still writing/producing the movie, and had this to say in a joint statement about their successor:
We are so excited to collaborate with Rob. He is a comedy genius, a visual savant, and we have been stalking him for years. No one works harder than Rob, and his aesthetic, combined with his sense of humor, bring a strong, unique, thoughtful, and passionately nerdy voice to this project. People who know him are slapping their foreheads today and saying, ‘Of course!'
Director of The LEGO Movie Sequel, Rob Schrab

Rob Schrab is a multi-talented guy but is perhaps best known for his TV work (Community, The Mindy Project, The Sarah Silverman Program) and the screenplay of Monster House. The LEGO Movie Sequel will be his first time directing a feature film.

While a little sad that Chris Miller and Phil Lord won't be directing the film, I believe a new helmer will bring a fresh take. The LEGO Movie was a daring and surprising film, so a change of director could be a nice way to keep things original and, yes, awesome.

Warner Bros. is currently aiming for a 2018 release date.

  1. When I heard that the Lego sequel is going to be helmed by another than Miller/Lord-duo, I was really disappointed and almost write this off competely. Because this sequel could became as ridiculous as Shrek the third/Forever and all the Disney cheapuels when someone else directing can even potentially destroy the greatness of the original.

HOWEVER, as its seems like that Miller and Lord have honest faith for Rob Schrab helming this project. As the you ''Damien'' pointed out that Rob will maybe approaching for fresh ways to evolute the sequel in the same way what Pixar did for Toy Story 2. Thats sounds really great so far and I should give it a another chance as we maybe have our next Toy Story 2/3 and HTTYD2. But we know nothing what this sequel is about yet or if this will live up to the hype. We have to wait until 2017-2018 when the first teaser and reveiws are coming out.

So, lets see unitl 2018... ;)

  2. Plus the fact they're still writing and producing the sequel means it'll probably retain a lot of what made the first film great, while a new director will help make sure it's not just a rehash of it. (Plus Rob Schrab directed some absolutely awesome episodes of Community series 5! Which has a similar, suitably-random, sensibility to TLM.)
