Disney and Pixar News from CinemaCon 2012

Yesterday at CinemaCon 2012, at Disney's exhibit, the guests in attendance were treated to a plethora of exciting news pertaining to lots of upcoming films to be released under the Disney banner; including lots of exciting Pixar news.

Disney first:
  • Although we already knew this, via screenwriter Nicholas Stoller, Disney have now given official confirmation that they're working on The Muppets 2.
  • Fans at the event were also treated to the first few minutes of footage from Disney's 51st animated film, the video game themed, Wreck-It Ralph.
  • They were also shown some new footage from Tim Burton's Frankenweenie.

Check out the Pixar news after the jump.

Pixar, never to be outdone, had some more interesting news of their own. Firstly, The Untitled Pixar Movie About Dinosaurs, directed by Bob Peterson (co-director, Up), now has an actual title: The Good Dinosaur. Consensus on the name is somewhat split, I happen to like it - I think we can possibly glean a How to Train Your Dragon-like relationship between boy and dinosaur from it. Bob Peterson is possibly the greatest Pixarian to have never directed a feature film, so we feverishly await The Good Dinosaur, due for a new release date of 30th May, 2014.

Here's the official description for the film:

What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? This hilarious, heartfelt and original tale is directed by Bob Peterson (co-director/writer, “Up;” writer, “Finding Nemo”) and produced by John Walker (“The Incredibles,” “The Iron Giant”).

In some slightly less brilliant news, Pete Docter's next film, the, still untitled, film that takes you inside a young girl's mind, has been delayed by just over a year. The Monsters, Inc. director's next film is now due on 19th June, 2015. Whilst it's a shame we'll have to wait an extra year for the Oscar winning director's next animated effort, it's undoubtedly good if it means the film will turn out even better.

Here's the official description for Docter's latest:

Pixar takes audiences on incredible journeys into extraordinary worlds: from the darkest depths of the ocean to the top of the tepui mountains in South America; from the fictional metropolis of Monstropolis to a futuristic fantasy of outer space. From director Pete Docter (“Up,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and producer Jonas Rivera (“Up”), the inventive new film will take you to a place that everyone knows, but no one has ever seen: the world inside the human mind.

Sharing the 2015 slate with Pete Docter's mind film, is Lee Unkrich's latest endeavour. The director of Toy Story 3 is repaired with Toy Story 3 producer, Darla K. Anderson, to bring us a thus far untitled film, very different to the Pixar norm, about the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos - yes, that does mean the day of the dead. This bizarre premised Pixar film is due in Autumn 2015.

Here's the description for that:

From director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson, the filmmaking team behind the Academy Award®-winning “Toy Story 3,” comes a wholly original Pixar Animation Studios film that delves into the vibrant holiday of Día de los Muertos.

Finally, the fans in attendance were treated to a couple of trailers; one hyping the upcoming re-release of Finding Nemo in 3D, and the other, more excitingly, the very first teaser trailer for Monsters University. The prequel to 2001's smash-hit Monsters, Inc. is due here in the UK on 19th July, 2013 and is directed by Dan Scanlon. The teaser allegedly entailed Sully pulling a prank on Mike, and received big laughs. I would suspect the teaser will make its way online very soon, as it will likely, as is the tradition, be paired with Brave in June (August in the UK).

Very exciting news all round; Pixar have a special knack for making you care about the littlest details.
