Jon Favreau's Next Project is a CGI Remake of 'The Lion King'

We thought Jon Favreau was actively working on the sequel to his Jungle Book movie (or maybe on Magic Kingdom), but it turns out his next film will probably be a CGI remake of the 1994 Disney classic The Lion King.

Jon Favreau hinted at the project on twitter before Disney officially revealed it. Don't be fooled by anyone saying this is a live-action remake: the characters will all be animated, as were Baloo, Shere Khan or Bagheera is this year's Jungle Book. This quote from Disney's statement makes it pretty clear:
The project follows the technologically groundbreaking smash hit The Jungle Book, directed by Favreau, which debuted in April and has earned $965.8 million worldwide.
It appears Jon Favreau will still direct a sequel to The Jungle Book, but this will have to wait. No release date or casting for The Lion King has been announced yet.
