Pixar have a wonderful New Year treat for us all, as they sent ComingSoon.net a card wishing them a Happy New Year, complete with exclusive concept art from three of their upcoming films!
The card included a piece of artwork from the studio's next feature, Monsters University, which we've already seen before, as well as three brand new pieces. First of all, we get a stunning piece of artwork (above) from Up co-director Bob Peterson's directorial debut, The Good Dinosaur. The film is co-directed by Peter Sohn (Partly Cloudy) and produced by John Walker (The Incredibles). The Good Dinosaur, which just so happens to be my most anticipated Pixar film, is due on 30th May, 2014 in the US and 18th July, 2014 in the UK, and has the following mini-synopsis:
What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct?
We then get a look at the next film from the marvellous Pete Docter, which is set inside a young girl's mind, casting her emotions as the film's characters. Largely cited as The Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside the Mind, the film is now apparently angling after the somewhat shorter title of The Inside Out. Whatever it's called, with that premise, and given Docter's track record, it promises to be a massively creative film. Co-directed by Ronnie del Carmen (story supervisor, Up) and produced by Jonas Rivera (also Up), this one is due on 19th June, 2015 and described by:
From director Pete Docter ("Up," "Monsters, Inc.") and producer Jonas Rivera ("Up"), the inventive new film will take you to a place that everyone knows, but no one has ever seen: the world inside the human mind.
Finally, we got a striking piece of artwork from Pixar's 2016 release (it's possible though that the studio may have more than one film out that year). That release, with no concrete release date decided upon yet, is being helmed by the director-producer team of Lee Unkrich and Darla K. Anderson, who previously brought us the Best Picture nominated Toy Story 3, and is about the Mexican Día de los Muertos holiday - the Day of the Dead. As expected, the artwork is charismatic and exotic, rather than grim and morose. No title given for that yet, but it does have the following description:
From director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson, the filmmaking team behind the Academy Award®-winning "Toy Story 3," comes a wholly original Pixar Animation Studios film that delves into the vibrant holiday of Día de los Muertos.
One thing's for sure as we move forward into 2013, critics can spout all the drivel they like about how Pixar have missed a step in recent years, but the studio is clearly as creative and inventive as ever, and has an exciting upcoming slate to prove it.
