Watch: Brilliant New Trailer for Epic

Blue Sky Studios are great. They get a lot of flack sometimes for their more goofy, comic approach to animation - versus the more sophisticated stories of Pixar or, now, DreamWorks - but their films have heart, have depth, are gorgeous, and, yes, have lots of, sometimes asinine, comedy. I loved the first two Ice Age films (3, not so much; I still haven't seen 4), I loved Robots as a kid, Horton Hears a Who! was fun, and Rio was a great film! That said, the Fox-owned studio's next film, Epic, looks like a departure from their pre-existing mould, and I'm all for that.

More sincere, more delicate - even more gorgeously animated - and seemingly less comic, the film (based on William Joyce's 1996 book, The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs) looks set to show a lot of people just what Blue Sky Studios are really capable of.

After we got some exciting new images from Epic yesterday, iTunes Movie Trailers today treat us to a brilliant new trailer for the film, directed by Chris Wedge (Ice Age, Robots). You can check the trailer out above via movieclipTRAILERS though, and it's great!

Flynn? Does Rapunzel know what you're doing?

I really can't praise it enough: great intense feel, wonderful song choice, impressive battles and set-pieces, some bad-ass characters, and some really quite cool looking villains, as well as less of the, admittedly quite irritating, comic relief that we saw in the previous (also great) trailer. Downside? The main male character (Leaf Man?) looks uncomfortably like Flynn Rider...

I'm getting an Avatar meets Studio Ghibli vibe from Epic, but, as director Chris Wedge said"it has its own personality", and it really looks like it's going to live up to its title. Kudos, Blue Sky, and keep up the good work!

Epic storms into cinemas on 24th May, 2013 - check it out!
