Angry Birds are soon leaping from smartphones to a cinema screen. The film, directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis will arrive on 13th May (UK) / 20th May (US), 2016, and you can watch a new trailer for it after the break.

Frankly, who knows whether the Angry Birds Movie will be good or terrible... But if this surprisingly great first look at the characters as they'll appear in the film - and the solid and diverse voice cast - is anything to go on, it might surprise us yet.

Animation Veterans/Directorial First-Timers Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly to Direct Angry Birds

Rovio are expanding their smash-hit Angry Birds franchise rapidly; what started life as a mobile game is now an all-spanning merchandise line, a series of animated shorts and, soon enough, an animated feature. Angry Birds, which will smash its way into cinemas (distributed by Sony) on 1st July, 2016, now has a pair of directors, says Entertainment Weekly.

Simpsons Writer and Clone Wars Producer Join Angry Birds

Rovio have announced that Jon Vitti, whose previous credits include The Simpsons and The Office, will pen the screenplay for their upcoming animated Angry Birds movie. Vitti, a Harvard graduate, won an Emmy for his work on King of the Hill, as well writing a couple of episodes of The US Office and being one of eleven credited writers for The Simpsons Movie. Worryingly though, he also co-wrote the Alvin and the Chipmunks film.

Sony Will Release Rovio's Angry Birds Film on 1st July, 2016

Rovio announced today that their Angry Birds animated movie will be released by Sony Pictures, and that the worldwide release date is currently set for 1st July, 2016. Rovio themselves - in the Marvel mould - are developing, producing and financing the film.

The film is being produced by John Cohen (Despicable Me) and executive produced by David Maisel (Iron Man). No word on a director or writer yet though.

In the meantime, Rovio's Angry Birds Toons are available to watch in-app every weekend!

First Angry Birds Toon Now Available to Watch

Rovio are gearing up for a feature animation adaptation of their popular Angry Birds franchise. In the meantime, the studio are stretching their animation legs with a series of new animated shorts.The first in the series, revolving around the game's yellow bird, Chuck, debuted over the weekend on all Angry Birds games. To watch it, head on over to any one of those games (they're free to download on Android) and click on the Toons button. Check out a sneak peak below.



I've checked the short out myself, and it's pretty fun. Obviously, it's no Looney Tunes (although that does seem to be the tone it's trying to strike), and it's clearly going to be more entertaining for kids than the rest of us. But there are a few laughs to be had, and the very short runtime means the limited story doesn't factor in - I'm still not sure how a feature film's going to work though. The second short debuts this weekend.

Trailer for Angry Birds Toons Series; Starts Next Month

A little later than originally planned, but Rovio's Angry Birds animated series is finally taking flight; a weekly Angry Birds Toons animated series will launch on the weekend beginning 16th March.

The series, as of yet, has no TV airing deal in the US or the UK, so will air online - not a bad thing given the billion views Rovio's YouTube videos have already amassed in total. The game-turned-series' blog broke the news, giving a brief synopsis too:

"Angry Birds Toons is an all-new animated series that throws the doors to Piggy Island wide open! For the first time ever, you can get up close and personal with your favorite characters. Join us every week starting the weekend of March 16th for a brand new episode featuring the latest adventures of the birds and pigs!"

This is presumably stage one in preparing audiences for the Angry Birds feature film coming in just three years. We'll keep you informed.

Angry Birds: The Movie Due 2016!

Today, on the third anniversary of the release of the original Angry Birds, Rovio Entertainment announced that the planned film adaptation of the insanely popular mobile gaming series will hit cinemas in 2016!

John Cohen (Despicable Me) and former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel (Iron Man) will produce and executive produce the film, which is being entirely produced and financed by Rovio themselves, respectively. Cohen has worked closely with Blue Sky Studios previously, but, worryingly, "had the idea to reimagine Alvin and the Chipmunks and developed the 2007 film." Otherwise, I'm pretty excited!

"Following Marvel Studios’ example, which was architected by David Maisel, Rovio will produce and finance the movie outside the studio system and retain full creative control while creating innovative entertainment at the highest level of quality." Says the press release.

Angry Birds: The Movie will have finished loading by summer 2016, and, who knows, maybe we'll see a film version of Angry Birds Star Wars one day - presumably after Disney have bought Rovio as well...

Angry Birds Animated Series Due in Autumn - Film to Follow

Following the release of their latest Angry Birds game, Angry Birds Space, gaming giant Rovio, the studio behind arguably the best known gaming franchise on the planet, has announced that they are to expand the Angry Birds universe beyond merely the games - with the announcement of an animated series and a feature film in development!

Speaking at the MIPTV conference in Cannes, Nick Dorra, head of animation for Rovio, stated Rovio are going to release "a weekly series later this year of shortform content". The series will consist of 52 animated shorts, set to be around the 2 and a half - 3 minute mark. The animated shorts, created in-house by Rovio's animation department, will likely resemble this kind of thing.

On the reasons behind the branching out of the Angry Birds franchise, Dorra said:

"It's about telling more engaging stories... and deeper thoughts, deeper feelings of the characters", "Angry Birds is not just about the gameplay, and will be in the future less and less about the slingshot, actually, and more and more about the characters."

When asked about the possibility of an Angry Bird feature film, Dorra stated "It’s in development, but it won’t be out in 2013 or 2014. You’ll have to bide your time and first watch all of our shorts!”. Rovio are also closely working with David Maisel, the former head of Marvel Studios, on the project.

Not one to forget their roots though, Rovio announced also that they will be releasing several new games as well, including new Angry Birds games and an entirely new game.

We'll have to wait to see how these animation projects work out - as gaming film adaptations don't have a great track record - but, for now at least, the prospect is very exciting.

My Fourth Uploaded Drawing - Angry Birds

Those of you that follow my Twitter may have already saw my new drawing, of the main Angry Bird from the uber popular mobile game (above). I drew the bird, who is the main character of the Angry Birds franchise, as with previously (with Rex, Wheezy and a Squeeze Toy Alien), on the Brushes for iPod Touch.

Following up from my review last week of Doodle Jump Hop, I have decided to write my second ever A113Animation Game Review. This newest review is of Angry Birds Rio, a continuation of the wildly successful Angry Birds franchise, to help promote Blue Sky Studios' next animated film (out next month), Rio.

As those of you who follow the blog will know, I am soon uploading a review of Angry Birds Rio (released today), however, as previously reported, Illumination Entertainment and Lima Sky have united to promote IE's upcoming movie, Hop. That is what this very review will deal with:

Angry Birds Rio Gameplay Trailer

On the day that we get our first look at the gameplay for my most anticipated game of all time, Batman; Arkham City (sequel to the smash hit, Batman: Arkham Asylum), we also get our first look at the gameplay for a game that I am also very much anticipating, Angry Birds Rio (above)!

Rather than just the continuation of the already awesome Angry Birds formula that many people (including myself) may have though AB: Rio would be, it appears to be somewhat different. The setting for one and some of the background characters you can see are completely new and look brilliant. It also seems more objective based as a game, having to specifically free the stolen birds and... correct me if I'm wrong, but is that a boss battle with Rio's villain Nigel that I spy?

I'm very much looking forward to this game and can't wait for it's March 22nd release date!

Another New Rio Clip

As predicted yesterday, the roll out of Rio videos continues as we get another clip of Blue Sky Studios' upcoming feature animated film, Rio. The film, due out next month, looks great and this clip gives us another little look at the film's main human protagonist.

Stay tuned for more Rio updates and, as the end of the video suggests, updates of Angry Birds Rio - I will even be uploading a review of the game after it's release on the 22nd!

Hop vs. Rio

So, the animated film battle of the iPod game magnates has begun!

Seemingly in somewhat of a measure to take on Angry Birds and Rio, Illumination Entertainment and their upcoming CGI/Live-Action mash up, Hop, have struck back. In the most recent update for Doodle Jump for iPod Touch and iPhone, the beloved game introduced a new feature; if you change your name to Hop or E.B. (the film's main character) you can play as E.B. in the game.

This is a shrewd move by Illumination Entertainment by associating themselves with arguably one of the most recognisable iOS games out there. Not that the company behind Despicable Me needs any extra advertisement. Saying that, Hop is out on April 1st and Rio on the 15th, so there will be some competition.
