Illumination Entertainment's
Despicable Me spin-off based around the series' yellow henchmen, now seemingly titled
Minions, just got its first voice cast member, America's Sweetheart, Sandra Bullock. The irony being that Bullock is following in Steve Carell's footsteps and playing an evil-doer in the film.
The Big Bang Theory's Raj's favourite actress, who won an Oscar for
The Blind Side in March 2010, is to voice Scarlett Overkill, a
"stylish bad-ass super-villain",
Deadline reports. Deadline give us both an intro to the character and to the titular Minions' roll in the film:
"This spinoff establishes that Minions have existed since the beginning of time, in service of history’s most ambitiously evil villains. Through their lovable ineptitude, Minions have managed to thwart and ultimately destroy all of those bad guys. This story picks up in the 1960s, before they hench-ed for Gru. With no more super-villains to serve, the Minions fall into a collective depression and three of them set out to seek a new evil master. They wind up at a villain convention, where they compete for the right to be henchmen for Scarlet Overkill, whose Audrey Hepburn-like high style appearance belies her world domination ambition and her aspirations to become the world’s first female super-villain."
Minions is being directed by Pierre Coffin (Despicable Me) and Kyle Balda (The Lorax), written by Brian Lynch and produced by Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy. Despicable Me co-director Chris Renaud is executive producing. It's due for a 19th December, 2014 release.
Before then, Despicable Me 2 is out this summer, starring the voices of Carell, Kristen Wiig and Al Pacino; it's released on 28th June (UK)/3rd July (US).
