DreamWorks' The Croods opens today, as the first major animated release of 2013. The caveman comedy, directed by How to Train Your Dragon helmer Chris Sanders and Space Chimps skipper Kirk DeMicco, is the first film under DreamWorks' new distribution deal with 20th Century Fox. Fox, and indeed DreamWorks, are presumably hoping that the film performs better than their last one under Paramount; Rise of the Guardians resulted in a write-down of $87 million for the studio and significant layoffs.
The critical response towards The Croods has oscillated quite a bit in the past week, and the film's currently sitting at 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, from 90 reviews. The consensus for the film reads:
"While it may not be as (ahem) evolved as the best modern animated fare, The Croods will prove solidly entertaining for families seeking a fast-paced, funny cartoon adventure."
Top critics are less than enamoured though, with The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw caustically calling it "a sort of methadone for die-hard Ice Age fans". I'll not be seeing the film until next weekend, so keep your eyes peeled for a review around that time.
The Croods stars the voices of Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone. If you've seen the film already, what did you think?

Looking forward for your review! I'm going to see it next week.
ReplyDeleteIt's gonna be in 3 weeks for me. But it's okay, since I'm not extremely eager to see it.
ReplyDeleteMm, I'm oddly excited to see it - a feeling that most others don't seem to share, it seems.
ReplyDeleteGreat! It seems like we can have the whole team review it then!
