New Despicable Me 2 Trailer Shows Gadgets, Girls and Gru

After a series of Minion vignettes, Universal have finally cranked out a trailer for Despicable Me 2 featuring its main character. iTunes Movie Trailers debuted the new trailer (embedded above) which returns Steve Carell to his role as the villainous Gru.

The new trailer also introduces us to a new female, anti-villain, spy character, who, going off this trailer, is more than capable of handling Gru - as well as offering up a particularly funny line or two: "You know, you really should announce your weapons after you fire them." Al Pacino is set to voice Gru's newest nemesis. Gru's adopted daughters are all returning, as is his bumbling gadget-guy, Dr Nefario (Russell Brand).

There's plenty to like in the trailer: Illumination's signature French-infused CG, a lot of really funny lines and playing off what they did the first time round, not just repeating it; fun musical choices, and, of course, a lot of adorable, hilarious Minion-antics. By the looks of things, expect a lot of spy themes running through Despicable Me 2, and it seems Gru's struggling with his daughters growing up - although I wouldn't expect Toy Story 3 levels of emotion on that front.

Despicable Me 2 is set for release in the US on 3rd July, it opens the Friday before (28th June) in the UK. As with the first film, it's directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud; Janet Healy and Illumination top brass Chris Meledandri are producing.
