Disney announced yesterday that they're working on a series of nineteen new 2D Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts, to premiere on 28th June on Disney Channel, Disney.com and their WATCH Disney Channel app.
The new series will feature Mickey and other classic Disney friends, including Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, Goofy and Pluto, in a "broad range of humorous situations that showcase [Mickey's] pluck and rascality, along with his long-beloved charm and good heartedness". The shorts will take Mickey to locales including Paris, New York and Beijing.
The first short is called Croissant de Triomphe and premiered online yesterday! Disney put it up on their site and you can watch it here. The video, however, is region-locked, so those outside of America can't watch it; but a cunning Cartoon Brew reader found a workaround, and you can actually watch the very cute, quirky short here.
Disney also announced the names and synopses for another two shorts:
Yodelberg: "Mickey longs to visit Minnie atop her mountaintop chalet but quickly realizes that the threat of avalanche has made the trek up the mountain more challenging than usual."
No Service: "Mickey and Donald try to buy lunch from a beachside snack shack but are unceremoniously turned down because of the classic “No shirt, no shoes, no service” admonition (of course, Mickey doesn’t wear a shirt and Donald doesn’t wear shoes!)."
The shorts will pack references to Disney heritage (there's a neat little Cinderella reference in this first short) and mash the classic 30s animation look with a more contemporary style - the Disney announcement proudly boasts about the shorts' rubber-hose style. The shorts come from Walt Disney Television Animation (Phineas and Ferb), but the animation is handled by Canada's Mercury Filmworks. Paul Rudish (Dexter's Laboratory) is directing and executive producing.
This first short certainly has a classic Disney feel and it is great to see Disney sticking with traditional animation and putting Mickey back in the spotlight a bit. Magnifique!
Now, speaking of Mickey Mouse, last month we heard rumours that a proposal had been submitted to Disney for an animated adaptation of the Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis film, The Stooge, now starring Mickey Mouse and Roger Rabbit. The voice of Roger Rabbit then shot the rumours down as just that, rumours. These so-called rumours, though, are being perpetuated by the author of the original Roger Rabbit book, who released yet another poster for the "Disney Development Proposal" today. Check it out above.
Thoughts on the gradual re-emergence of Mickey Mouse as a top Disney star? Like the new short? Think there's any credence to the Stooge rumours? Let us know below!

Oh yey! I love the animation style in this short (and hope the next few stay just as fun)! And I really hope this Mickey/Roger film turns out to be actually happening...
