AMPAS have announced the 19 animated film that are in contention for a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the upcoming 86th Academy Awards. Among the contenders are the likely big-name frontrunners: Disney's upcoming Frozen, Miyazaki's final film, The Wind Rises, and Pixar's latest, Monsters University; there are also smaller scale films, like French animated pic, Ernest & Celestine (which won the Best Animated Film gong at the César Awards, the French equivalent to the Oscars, back in February). Check out the full list of films submitted for consideration below, complete with their Rotten Tomatoes score (current at the time of writing), where there is one.

As there are more than the threshold of 16 films submitted, (assuming these films all achieve their required qualifying theatrical run) there will be five nominees shortlisted for the award again this year. I think we can safely rule out films like The Smurfs 2 and Planes, so here's the five films I reckon will make the cut:
- Frozen
- The Wind Rises
- Monsters University
- Ernest & Celestine
- Despicable Me 2
The Croods is a possibility, too. It's far too early to predict what'll win, but Frozen certainly has a lot of hype right now, and The Wind Rises, by virtue of being Oscar-winner Hayao Miyazaki's last film, stands a very good chance [check out Mayra's review of the film here]. Although it doesn't seem likely that Pixar's Monsters University will take home the gong, it is possible; the Academy have always been fond of Pixar (Brave won the Oscar last year, despite Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman seemingly having better chances), and it might compensate for the fact that the original Monsters, Inc. didn't win the award.
The nominees will be announced on 16th January, 2014, and the 86th annual Academy Awards will be presented on 2nd March, 2014, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.

That list of five nominees looks pretty accurate and I agree that the only spot that can be changed is Ernest & Celestine for The Croods, something I wouldn’t want since Ernest seems far more better and a little diversity in the category is always nice.
