Frozen, The Wind Rises, Monsters U and 16 More Submitted for Oscar Consideration

AMPAS have announced the 19 animated film that are in contention for a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the upcoming 86th Academy Awards. Among the contenders are the likely big-name frontrunners: Disney's upcoming Frozen, Miyazaki's final film, The Wind Rises, and Pixar's latest, Monsters University; there are also smaller scale films, like French animated pic, Ernest & Celestine (which won the Best Animated Film gong at the César Awards, the French equivalent to the Oscars, back in February). This Week on A113Animation (14th - 20th October, 2013)

Apologies for the infrequency of this feature as of late (and indeed that this week's is a day and a half late!), alas the non-animation world gets in the way occasionally. All the same, there were a few really exciting bits of news this week: casting rumours for another Marvel film (it's rarely a week we don't have some of that); are Pixar working on Cars 3?; cool new stills from DreamWorks' Mr. Peabody & Sherman; a fantastic new trailer for Frozen; we've also got features, reviews, and a Disney anniversary post; and we've launched an exciting Art of Turbo competition! NY Times Profiles DreamWorks CCO Bill Damaschke

The New York Times has a great piece up highlighting one of the most powerful men in the animation industry: DreamWorks' Chief Creative Officer, Bill Damaschke. Damaschke may not be as well known to animation fans as Pixar's John Lasseter - in fact the article dubs him "The Quiet Force Behind DreamWorks" - but his influence and importance at the studio cannot be understated.

This Week on A113Animation (1st - 7th July, 2013)

This was a jam-packed week for animation fans, not least because we got 4 brand spanking new trailers on the same day. And that was just by Tuesday! We've also got box office updates, interviews, posters and set pictures. As well as your usual features, we've also got a review of Illumination Entertainment's Despicable Me 2 and an editorial about the current state of Pixar. Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Etc. Talk Turbo

Jake Hamilton is back with more great questions for big stars, this time for the cast of DreamWorks' Turbo. The film premiered at a CineEurope event in Barcelona late last month, and Jake was on hand to ask some topical questions about the film to stars Ryan Reynolds (who voices the eponymous snail racer), Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Peña and Snoop Dogg. For some hilarious Sam Jackson-y goodness and more, check the interview out above.

Turbo hits cinemas on 17th July in the US, and 18th October in the UK.

New Turbo Trailer Shows Taco Beds and a Wrestling Granny

Yahoo! has the latest trailer for DreamWorks' Turbo, a film that is increasingly looking like a cross between Cars and Ratatouille. But, y'know, with a snail.

That said, the trailer is a lot of fun, showing off some of the impressive visuals we've seen in previous footage, and some new story beats.  The old lady (voiced by The Hangover's Ken Jeong of all people) seems a fairly apt wrestler, breaking out sleeper holds and hurricanranas - she looks to be a lot of fun! Turbo also features the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Peña and Samuel L. Jackson.

Turbo races into US cinemas on 17th July, but is stalling on the way to its more distant 18th October UK release.

This Week on A113Animation (24th - 30th June, 2013)

While news wasn't particularly heavy this week, we did have a lot of cool blog content for you. As well as the 24th week of Munir's Disney Retrospective, we had the 2nd week of Damien's final Futurama countdown; Mayra reviewed My Neighbor Totoro on Blu-ray; I posted an list of 5 animated sequels that should get made; not to mention that episode 2 of the A113Animation Podcast finally came online. That, in addition to a trailer, some clips and featurettes, more release date news and some good ole Pixar stuff, mean this was still a pretty fun week here on A113Animation.

New Turbo Clips Show DreamWorks' Snail Pit Crew

DreamWorks have released a couple of new clips from their next feature film, Tubro, over the last couple of weeks, focussing on the team of snails that rally around the titular racer. They're both fun and well animated, but the "Pit Stop" one in particular is far too close to Pixar's Cars for my liking: a slightly odd group of strangers who become friends with a racer and then help him out, complete with pep talk, on the day of the big race... Sounding a little too familiar.

Here we are, another week, another batch of animation news. Apologies for forgetting about last week's, but we've got a lot more this week to tide you over. DreamWorks Bits: New Turbo Poster and Trolls Director Announced

DreamWorks have had quite the success with their first feature film of 2013; The Croods has currently raked in upwards of $563 million. They'll be hoping for a repeat of that with their summer release, the Ryan Reynolds-starring escargot-adventure, Turbo. Today the studio rolled out another new poster for the film.

Fox at CinemaCon: Dragon 2, Peabody, Epic, Peanuts and More!

Disney had a very packed showing at CinemaCon this week, splashing details and footage from their Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar properties (although very little from their own animated films), but 20th Century Fox weren't slouching with the promotion for their own powerful animation stable either.

DreamWorks Bits: The Croods To Get a Sequel; New Turbo Poster

This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to those who've been keeping up to date with how the film's been performing at the box office (particularly, that it's a significant improvement over Rise of the Guardians), but Deadline reports that DreamWorks have green-lit a sequel to The Croods - which will be announced at CinemaCon tomorrow (check out our coverage of Disney's CinemaCon news here).

Watch: Quite Fun New Trailer for DreamWorks' Turbo

Just ahead of their first release of 2013 (The Croods, which opens this Friday), DreamWorks have rolled out the first full theatrical trailer for their summer flick, Turbo. And it's actually pretty good.

I didn't like the teaser DreamWorks put out back in December. It was one-note and generic, and seemed like something DreamWorks would put out back in the bad old days of Shark Tale and Over the Hedge. This trailer, however, was a lot of fun - head on over to iTunes Movie Trailers to check it out.

New Teaser Poster for DreamWorks' Turbo

DreamWork' release their first film of 2013, The Croods, later this month. As such, the studio (and new distributor Fox) are beginning to slowly turn their promotional attention towards their next release, Turbo. Today that consists of a cool new teaser poster - well, cool design. Not so cool slogan.

Turbo sees an ordinary garden snail (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), with big dreams of becoming a super-speedy Indy-500 racer. In a fortuitous turn of events, the unsuspecting snail gets the Spider-Man treatment, when an accident imbues him with just the speed he needed. The film, whose premise I'm still not sold on, is directed by David Soren (Merry Madagascar) and has an all-star cast including Samuel L. Jackson and Paul Giamatti.

A tie-in series, Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team), is currently in production. Turbo hits US cinemas on 19th July, it arrives in the UK on 18th October. Check out the teaser trailer here.

DreamWorks To Launch First Netflix-Original Kids' Series with Turbo: F.A.S.T

It's been a tough few months for DreamWorks: Rise of the Guardians underperformed, there's been release date chaos, films have been scrapped, people are being let go; but, they are still, for the most part, doing business as usual. Yesterday, news broke that DreamWorks were working with Netflix to produce the streaming service's first original children's series.

2012 has passed and Awards season is upon us, so we'll soon know what the critical successes of 2012 were (in terms of box-office successes, I'll refer you to someone much more knowledgeable about that than I - though what I can easily judge, is that 2012 was not a good year for stop-motion). So, now we look to the future - or, more accurately, the present - and our inner film-savant surfaces as we offer our predictions on what will be big in 2013.

DreamWorks Release Turbo Teaser Trailer

DreamWorks have released (via iTunes Movie Trailers) the first trailer for their snail-starring, Cars-like feature, Turbo. Turbo is directed by veteran DreamWorks story artist-turned director (Merry Madagascar), David Soren, and will be the second DreamWorks feature released under their distribution deal with 20th Century Fox - following The Croods in March.
