The 'Cars 3' Teaser Trailer is Surprisingly Dark
Way to catch us off guard, Pixar! This first Cars 3 teaser is not exactly what we expected to get as a follow-up to the very silly Cars 2. This new entry in the Cars series seems to go back to its roots (the beginning of the teaser is a clear nod to the opening of the first film) and looks even bleaker and darker in tone. Watch the 50-second clip below.

![]() |
| A Cars 3 concept art by Pixar artist Noah Klocek |
Cars 3 has been scheduled for a June 2017 release for a long time, but the film was so shy since it's been announced, some people were starting to wonder if it had been cancelled - myself included. At last, we've got some news on the project: a director, some new characters names, a tease of the story and even two concept arts. More below.

[UPDATED] Dan Scanlon Will [Not] Helm 'Cars 3'
![]() |
| Dan Scanlon |
Update (23/02): it looks like Oh My Disney made a mistake, which has been fixed since we posted the news: Dan Scanlon won't direct Cars 3 after all. Which means we still don't know who is directing a film that's supposed to be released next year. We wouldn't be surprised if the movie gets pushed back.

The Incredibles 2 and Cars 3 to Actually Be the Same Film, Says Iger
A couple of weeks ago we got the mammoth news that Disney and Pixar were going ahead with sequels to The Incredibles and Cars. Now we've got news which is even bigger: Disney CEO Bob Iger says that the two films will actually be one; a crossover film which will lay the groundwork for a "Pixar Cinematic Universe."

Breaking: Pixar Announce The Incredibles 2! And Cars 3...
You've been asking for it since 2004; every time somebody makes an "unmade sequels that need to happen" list, it's there; and now, it's actually bloody happening: Pixar have officially announced that they're making The Incredibles 2! Also on the way - although far less surprising and largely less welcome - is a third Cars film. And no, it's not April 1st.

Are Pixar Making Cars 3? Sheriff Seems to Think So.
Well this is sure to inflame the 'Pixar are losing their touch' brigade. A new interview with Michael Wallis, the voice of the Sheriff in the Cars films, has been making waves online, as the author/actor said, with some certainty, that Pixar are currently making Cars 3. Please do note though, nothing has been confirmed and this is entirely, until we're told otherwise, to be treated as a rumour.

New Planes Clip: John Cleese Gets Shamed by El Chupacabra
Disney have released a clip from their upcoming spin-off of Pixar's Cars franchise, Planes. The clip shows El Chupacabra (voice of Carlos Alazraqui) shaming seemingly arrogant veteran Bulldog (John Cleese). The humour's about what you'd expect it to be. Although word is the film is actually quite decent; our own Nadine saw the film in Leicester Square last week, but you won't be hearing her thoughts until after the embargo is lifted on 7th August.
Planes, which was originally intended as direct-to-DVD film, is produced by DisneyToon Studios and directed by Klay Hall. The film also stars the voices of Dane Cook, Stacy Keach and Brad Garrett; Pixar and Disney Animation CCO John Lasseter is executive producing.
The film set "above the world of Cars" opens on 9th August (US)/16th August (UK).

Do All Pixar Films Exist in the Same Universe? Well, No, But this Theory's Magnificent.
I'd say it's extremely unlikely that you haven't thought about the possibility that the talking fish of Finding Nemo exist in the same universe as the talking rats of Ratatouille or the talking insects of A Bug's Life. In fact, a lot of Pixar's filmography could well be interlinked. Well, Cars kinda scuppers all of that... But nonetheless, I doubt you've thought about in as much detail or as cripplingly hilarious a fashion as Jon Negroni.
According to Negroni's "Pixar Theory", which is making the rounds online, A Bug's Life is post-apocalyptic, Monsters, Inc. is set in the distant future and the witch from Brave is actually a time-travelling Boo looking for Sulley through time and scattering Easter eggs to help him find her. Oh, and "Wall-E is basically Robot Jesus". The theory is so massively extensive, at least some of it has to be true... right?
Check out the hilariously ridiculous and ridiculously hilarious theory in all its extensive glory here.

Watch: New Trailer for Disney's Planes
If Disney are trying to stress that this isn't a Pixar film and is not an official Cars film, they're not doing a great job; starting this new trailer with stands full of spectating cars - which could have been ripped straight from Cars or Cars 2 - and commentator Brent Mustangburger - who also featured in Cars 2 - certainly doesn't make it look inherently different. It fits into the Cars world well, but this isn't going to help tell people that Planes is not a Pixar film...

New Poster for DisneyToon's Planes
Yesterday we got a healthy helping of new casting details and character posters from DisneyToon Studios' extension of the Cars universe, Planes. Today, we also get a new poster for the film (which hits cinemas in August).
It's a fun poster that shows off bad-guy Ripslinger (vocie of Ultimate Spider-Man's Roger Craig Smith) centrally, flanked by main character Dusty (Dane Cook) and his Mexican buddy El Chupacabra (Carlos Alazraqui). If nothing else, the film looks set to be entertaining and colourful.
Although, it seems as though it may be something beyond just that: Morgan from The Rotoscopers was able to check out a test screening of the film and seems to have actually quite enjoyed it, saying it's "just a lot of good-humored fun," and giving it an overall positive review. Morgan's post about it also comments that, unlike Pixar's Cars, Planes is (at least in part) a musical, saying the film features two songs. Check out their full breakdown of the screening here.
I'll admit, my interest for Planes has been piqued in the last couple of weeks. Now if only Disney would work as hard on marketing Frozen...

Three New, Non-Mater, Cars Toons Announced... For Tonight!
![]() |
| Cars Toons - Shorty Shorts: Hiccups |
Well, this is a surprise. Disney have just announced three new Cars Toons, being billed as Shorty Shorts, to premiere on Disney Channel tonight during an airing of Up (starting 8/7c) - note, these details are all for the US, though the shorts are to hit the Internet on Sunday. They're called Shorty Shorts because they're just that, short, about a minute and a half each, and they'll be airing throughout the night.

Watch: New Trailers for Cloudy 2 and Planes
Yesterday was a big poster day, today is a big trailer day. Sony have just rolled out the first trailer for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 on Yahoo! Movies, and it's good. Cloudy 2 clearly retains the visual inventiveness and quirky humour of the first film, and if you like food-related puns, you're in for a treat.

DisneyToon Studios' Planes Now to Be Released Theatrically
DisneyToon Studios' controversial Cars spin-off, Planes, was previously intended for a direct-to-DVD release for next Autumn, however, Box Office Mojo now reports that it will be released in cinemas. A release date of 9th August, 2013 is cited, which will put it in box office competition with DreamWorks' seemingly Cars-esque Turbo (check out the teaser trailer for that film here).
As Upcoming Pixar points out, with John Lasseter producing, this could be a sign that the film has turned out really rather well. On the flip-side, the much more pragmatic and pessimistic side, it could be just a ploy for money. We'll find out soon enough, I'm positive it won't be Pixar quality, but it should be enjoyable enough
Planes is directed by Klay Hall (The Simpsons, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure) and stars the voices of Jon Cryer and Brad Garrett. In my interview with Superman Classic director Rob Pratt, he spoke about Planes and the team working on it, saying:
""PLANES" has been a pleasure to work on largely because of the support John Lasseter has shown for the production. "Cars" is clearly a passion project for him, and he is so excited about having that world expanded. My director, Klay Hall, is an inspiring guy to be around, so knowledgeable and a great collaborator. I've learned a lot from him! The story crew got to be very close - I truly like and respect everyone on our team. I'm very proud of how the movie is coming out!"

Interview: Robb Pratt, Disney Storyboard Artist and Bizarro Classic Director
A while back, I shared with you a wonderful little short film called Superman Classic from Disney animator and storyboard artist, Robb Pratt. I fell in love with the tone and animation of the films and the, well, classic visual style of it; as well as a very witty and classically Superman-esque script. So, I was very excited two weeks ago when Robb released his follow up, Bizarro Classic. Longer, funnier, wonderful music, and, in my eyes, even better than Superman Classic, I was completely enamoured with Bizarro too!
In fact, I was so enamoured with Bizarro Classic that I sent Robb an email, telling him how much I'd enjoyed his Classic shorts, and asking if he'd mind doing an interview for the blog. Robb, a very kind and modest person, thankfully said yes.
You can read our extensive interview after the jump break, in which we talk about his work at Disney, on films like Tarzan and Hercules, his work at Disney Channel, his current work at DisneyToon Studios on Planes, how direct-to-DVD productions compare to normal features, and his Superman short films. Enjoy!

Watch: Time Travel Mater
The latest Cars Toon, Time Travel Mater - the redesigned version of the formerly planned Backwards to the Fowards - which aired a few weeks ago on ABC, is now online! Perhaps not as chaotic or fun as the early boards for the story made it seem, it is very funny, very sentimental and focuses a bit more on characters besides Lightning and Mater. Check it out embedded above.
I also really enjoyed the Disney reference towards the start of the short, declaring it a "Pixar Laugh-O-Gram", paying homage to Walt Disney's early days in animation.
No word yet on when or if we can expect another Cars Toon; although we've still got 5 more Toy Story Toons on the way!

New Cars Toon Coming Very Soon
So, it turns out Air Mater wasn't the final Cars Toon after all. Following on from the news that we can expect 3 new Toy Story Toons yesterday, today, via Disney Parks Blog, we get a clip from the eleventh Cars Toon (above), titled Time Travel Mater.
The short film lets the audience "travel back in time with Mater to the beginning of Radiator Springs", and every time Mater drives backwards, he travels back in time. If this concept sounds familiar to you, it's entirely possible it's because you watched the 'Unmade Tales' clips on the Cars Toon: Mater's Tall Tales DVD. When watching the 'Unmade Tale' of this story (below), then titled Backwards to the Forwards, I was very disappointed that nothing came of it - it looked great! So, I'm very glad to see it's been picked up again and I can't wait to see it.
The short will be playing stateside on, Disney owned channel, ABC along with the feature film Cars, both playing from 8 - 11 PM (EST) on 16th June. The three hour bill also features a video tour of the newly opening Cars Land by the voice of Mater, Larry the Cable Guy. Time Travel Mater will premiere, though, on 15th June, the opening day of Cars Land, at Disney California Adventure. No word as to when fans outside of the US can expect to see it; I'd presume on Disney Channel or Disney Cinemagic sometime in the near future.

New Air Mater Images
Along with Cars 2 and the Toy Story short film, Hawaiian Vacation, the home media release of Cars 2 will also feature the tenth, and purportedly final, Cars Toon, Air Mater. As the release of Cars 2 on DVD, Blu Ray and Digital Download approaches - due to be released this November around the world - Disney and Pixar have rolled out some brand new images of the short film.
The short film is supposed to link in to Disneytoon Studios', straight to DVD/Blu Ray, Cars spin-off, Planes, and is the first short film to be entirely produced by Pixar Canada.

John Lasseter Speaks Out on Cars 2
Recently, John Lasseter spoke to Brooks Barnes of The New York Times, specifically about the not so warm response that many critics had to Pixar's latest release, Cars 2. Cars 2 was not, by any stretch of the imagination, a bad fim (as my review reflected, and many of the more respected reviews - such as Roger Ebert's review of the film), it was, indeed, a very good film; in many ways an improvement on the original. Nonetheless, it was not Pixar's finest hour, and many critics panned the film and the studio for this, saying Pixar had sold out and that the film was a disappointment, but the Pixar and Disney Animation CCO had some choice words for these critics.
Addressing the critics who assumed (apparently wrongly) that it was big, bad Disney that had pressured Pixar into making another film to capitalise on the billion dollar Cars franchise, Lasseter said:
"It’s people who don’t know the facts, rushing to judge. I recognize my place in the Walt Disney Company, but my job, my focus, my deepest desire is to entertain people by making great movies, and we did that with ‘Cars 2.’ ”
Obviously very defencive of the film he directed, Lasseter also, on the subject of the somewhat negative critical response levied at the studio after their latest film, - following 11 consecutive hits - said:
“I typically don’t read the reviews. I make movies for that little boy who loves the characters so much that he wants to pack his clothes in a Lightning McQueen suitcase.”
The article concluded with a quote from Lasseter on why the Cars franchise is special to him, saying:
"I reached deep into myself and saw what this film was about, and I think it’s clear that audiences have responded. It’s is a very, very special film to me.”
