DreamWorks To Launch First Netflix-Original Kids' Series with Turbo: F.A.S.T

It's been a tough few months for DreamWorks: Rise of the Guardians underperformed, there's been release date chaos, films have been scrapped, people are being let go; but, they are still, for the most part, doing business as usual. Yesterday, news broke that DreamWorks were working with Netflix to produce the streaming service's first original children's series.

Presumably spurred on by the success of their all-in-one release of their David Fincher-directed original series, House of Cards, Netflix are expanding on their original programming, one such facet of that is a new series based on DreamWorks' Turbo. The new show, Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team), is nothing out of the ordinary for DreamWorks, who have had previous feature-based shows like Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness and Dragons: Riders of Berk, what is out of the ordinary is that they've opted to take it to Netflix, rather than their usual home, Nickelodeon, or their new one, Cartoon Network.

Netflix's rather ambitious idea of future TV watching.

The move follows DreamWorks' previous deal with Netflix, moving the TV rights to their films from HBO to the web-streaming service. DreamWorks certainly seem to recognise that this is the way TV is headed; Jeffrey Katzenberg commented:

"[Netflix] pioneered a new model for TV dramas with House of Cards, and now together, we're doing the same thing with kids' programming," said DreamWorks Animation's Chief Executive Officer, Jeffrey Katzenberg. "DreamWorks is thrilled to be part of the television revolution."

The show is, of course, based on the upcoming feature film Turbo, being directed by David Soren, which follows an average snail who dreams of being a racer, only to be imbued with super-snail abilities which afford him the chance to do so. It stars the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Samuel L. Jackson and more, and is due for release on 19th July in the US and 18th October in the UK. Check out the teaser trailer here.

The show will pick up where the film leaves off, showcasing "the world-traveling exploits of our snail hero and his tricked-out racing crew as they master outrageous new stunts and challenge any villain unlucky enough to cross their path."

Turbo: F.A.S.T. starts streaming in December. Check out the full press release here.

  1. I don't know how I feel about this. I'm not even excited for the film so I'll have to wait and see.
