Monsters vs. Aliens Director and Muppets Screenwriter to Adapt Captain Underpants for DreamWorks

We heard a couple of years ago that DreamWorks had acquired the rights to adapt Dav Pilkey's bestselling (and really fun) Captain Underpants books. Now the studio has detailed the crew that will be bringing the bald, occasionally bipolar, scantily-clad superhero to the big screen!

Rob Letterman (Shark TaleMonsters vs. Aliens) is directing from a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Muppets), says THR. Lettterman and Stoller previously worked together on 2010's critically disliked Gulliver's Travels. DreamWorks exec. Damon Ross is producing the project.

Letterman (left) will direct, Stoller (right) is writing.

The film will follow Harold and George, two mischievous fourth graders, who accidentally hypnotise their nasty principal, Mr. Krupp, into stripping down to his tighty whities, shouting "Tra-la-laaa!" and becoming the titular Captain Underpants every time someone clicks their fingers.

The Captain Underpants book series, published by Scholastic, has been the source of a fair bit of controversy in its time, yet more than 50 million copies have been sold in the US alone since 1997.

As a childhood fan of the Captain Underpants series - and a fan of a decent amount of both Letterman and Stoller's work - I'm staying cheerfully optimistic about this. No release date stated as of yet, though.
