J-Lo and Steve Martin Join the Cast of DreamWorks' Home

While Pixar are a no-show, DreamWorks are going to have a big year in 2014. The studio will release three films: Mr. Peabody & Sherman, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and then Home. Jennifer Lopez and Steve Martin have joined the latter, alongside leads Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) and Rihanna.

Home (formerly titled Happy Smekday!, based on Adam Rex's book The True Meaning of Smekday) tells the story of an alien race that plan to invade Earth to make it into a new home for them. One young girl (Rihanna) escapes capture by the alien race (called Boovs) and joins up with a banished Boov (Parsons). Lopez will play Rihanna's mum, and Martin will voice a Boov captain called Smerk.

While the title's horribly generic, and I'm not a fan of singers starring in films, Home does sound rather fun.

Tim Johnson (Antz, Over the Hedge) will direct. Home hits cinemas on 26th November, 2014 in the US, and 5th December in the UK.

    Ugh...why, DreamWorks, why??

I haven't read the Adam Rex book, but I've heard good things about it. Now I get the feeling that they're going to butcher it with this movie. The title is horrible, bland and just plain boring. And the voice cast...*vomits*. Ok, I don't mind Steve Martin, and Jim Parsons should be alright, but...you get where I'm going. I too am not a fan of "singers" showing up in films. I don't think the synopsis alone is enough to win me over. It'll take a really damn good trailer to get me to see this.

I hate to sound pessimistic, and I have nothing against DreamWorks, it's just...well, I've already stated what I'm not liking about this film so far. Then again, even if the title and voice cast are terrible, that doesn't necessarily mean the film will be also.

But oh well, we still have HTTYD2 and Mr Peabody & Sherman to look forward to! Now those are two films I *really* want to see.

  2. This. I'm totally fine with Martin and Parsons. I think they'll be great. I think Parson's voice and personality will lend itself well to animation, and I'm already a fan of the guy's work on Big Bang Theory. Same goes for Martin. But I'm so sick and tired of seeing singers cast in films like they're actors or something.

I will say this: I was very irritated about Beyonce playing a character that also looks like Beyonce in the movie Epic, but her character ended up being one of the few things I liked about that movie. So who knows. Maybe Rihanna will be good. But I doubt it. I'll keep my expectations low. Maybe she'll surprise me.

  3. Undoubtedly there is a lot working against the film - the title, the singers in the cast, and Over the Hedge sucked - but the fun concept and Jim Parsons are enough to get me interested.
