Laika have put out two feature films so far - two spooky stop-motion films - Coraline and ParaNorman, and both have been very high quality. Now two-time Oscar nominees, Laika will be hoping to repeat that success with their next film, The Boxtrolls, based on the novel Here Be Monsters! by Alan Snow.
Since The Boxtrolls was announced, alongside some stunning concept art, we haven't heard or seen much from it. But Ric Sluiter (who worked on Circle 7's Toy Story 3 way-back-when) posted a couple of great, atmospheric sketches he did while working on the film. The artwork shows off characters called Fish, Arthur and Winnie, and the Puritan-ish clothes worn in the lower piece certainly does evoke the "posh Victorian-era town" of "Cheesebridge" described in the previous synopsis we got. As for what new this shows us... not a lot - but it's exciting. To get a fuller sense of the film, the previous piece of artwork we saw for the film is below.
The Boxtrolls - directed by Anthony Stacchi (Open Season) and Graham Annable (story artist, Coraline and ParaNorman) is described as "a 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid animated feature" and hits cinemas on 17th October, 2014.
