At the end of last month, it was announced that Pixar would induct their first heroine into the Disney Princes line, Brave's Merida. Yesterday, an official coronation ceremony took place at Walt Disney World, where Merida's own mum was on hand to welcome her to the line-up. Inside the Magic has some pictures and video highlights, showing off the event's glitz, glamour and bagpipes.
Meanwhile, the newly anointed princess, who was voiced by Kelly Macdonald in the Oscar-winning film, has undergone a 2D redesign - and it isn't going over very well. We discussed on the pilot episode of the A113Animation Podcast how little we care about the Disney Princess franchise, but Brave director Brenda Chapman cares very much about the character and is vehemently against the redesign, calling it "a blatantly sexist marketing move based on money."

I'm not horribly outraged by the 2D redesign - it itself is pretty harmless - but it is further evidence of Disney's magical-philosophy leading to extensive whitewashing of anything and anyone slightly less than perfect.
Nonetheless, it looks to have been a fun day at Disney World, and is further enduring proof that Brave wasn't a misstep by Pixar, but rather another classic in the making.
