Plot
A threatening alien spaceship approaches Earth, emitting a powerful musical tone while doing so. Fry thinks he's heard that melody before but he can't remember when. The Professor finds out it was on the last day of 1999, the same day Fry was frozen for a thousand years; so the Planet Express delivery boy reenacts that day through a dream-state, trying to find that musical tone, in order to save the world.
Review
Revisiting Fry's old life often proves interesting (see The Why of Fry or Luck of the Fryrish), and this week's episode confirms that trend. The story is a funny Close Encounters of the Third Kind parody mixed with some Inception, it features the always great Nibbler and Richard Nixon's head, but that's not what is most memorable about it. Game of Tones has the most satisfying emotional arc of this series. Some may say that Futurama has done this better before, but I'll let haters be haters (or nit-pickers be nit-pickers), and affirm that this episode's ending was not only among the most powerful of the sci-fi show's entire run; it felt original, and it's a massively important moment in Fry's story.
