Warner Bros. Working on a New Animated Scooby-Doo Film

The characters as they appear in Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. are developing a new Scooby-Doo feature film - an animated one, as opposed to the live-action/CG hybrid films of the early 2000s. The film is apparently being made with Atlas Entertainment, and being produced by Charles Roven (Man of Steel) and Richard Suckle (American Hustle), who both also produced the aforementioned live-action films starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Matt Lieberman (the upcoming Short Circuit) is scripting.

The film is obviously based on the eponymous pooch and his ragtag group of mystery solving friends, created by Hanna-Barbera back in 1969. Warner were keeping shtum with any specific details about the film though, so we're to assume that it's still a few years off yet. Even though it's not being produced in-house, the assumption seems to be this will fall under WB's rejuvenated animation banner, which kick-starts with The Lego Movie in February.

No word on the visuals either, although we're hoping it's hand-drawn, rather than CG. And if the film is as interesting visually - or indeed as fun story-wise - as the recent TV series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, I'll be happy.

There's no mention of the straight-to-DVD film being made with WWE (we can only hope that that's because that film has been lobotomised); this appears to be an entirely different film. And for that, I'm very grateful.

  1. An animated feature-- thank God! The live-action/CG ones were horrendous in my opinion. I've been a Scooby fan since I was little, and I would certainly like to see Scooby-Doo stay within the animated realm. Let's hope they don't opt for CG animation.
