Sir Ian McKellen Cast as Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast

Say what you want about these Disney live-action remakes, but you can't deny the casting of Beauty and the Beast is an embarrassment of riches: Variety reports that Sir Ian McKellen has joined the film as Cogsworth.

Ian McKellen will star alongside Emma Watson (Belle), Dan Stevens (Beast), Luke Evans (Gaston), Emma Thompson (Mrs. Potts), Josh Gad (LeFou) and Kevin Kline (Maurice).

In the original Disney animated classic, Cogsworth is the punctual, obedient majordomo of an arrogant Prince; when a curse transforms the Prince into the Beast, the majordomo becomes a clock. Cogsworth forms a comedy duo with the candelabra servant Lumière. We don't know yet who will play Lumière opposite Ian McKellen's Cogsworth, but we will probably learn soon, as principal photography on Beauty and the Beast is scheduled to start next month.

The film is directed by Bill Condon (who already worked with Ian McKellen on his upcoming Mr. Holmes) and will be released on the 17th March, 2017 (US).
