Guardians Of The Galaxy: Comic-Con 2013

Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn is fitting in to the Marvel family well, being extremely kind by teasing Comic Con audiences with footage - even though the film isn't that far into filming - as well as assembling the cast for the event.

Empire Online, who are out in San Diego (we are not), saw the footage and summed it up nicely on their site:
The footage began with 'Star-Lord', aka Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), entering an apparently deserted space ship (or temple? It's unclear). He picks up an artefact he finds there, to be shocked by Djimon Hounsou's Korath The Pursuer. "Who are you?" he demands. "I'm Star-Lord!" says Pratt, a little defiantly. "Who?" asks Korath, nonplussed. Set phasers for knowing, ladies and gentlemen.
Yes, it turns out Star Lord is not quite as badass as he thinks, and next we sees he's part of a usual suspects line-up being examined by John C. Reilly's Rhomann Dey, in a roll-call of the Guardians. Here's Zoe Saldana's green-skinned Gamora, Dave Bautista's massive Drax The Destroyer, covered in red and green; Groot, who's described as "house-plant-slash-muscle" and looks like an Ent gone bad; the seen-but-not-heard Rocket Racoon, who looks, well, just like a racoon, but apparently has a taste for car theft. Star-Lord slowly unwinds his middle finger at the guards. "Oh sorry, I don't know how this machine works," he says, utterly insincerely, Pratt obviously having the time of his life.
As we see flashes of prison riots and Star-Lord getting panicked when a guard uses his Walkman, Rhomann says "They call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy."
"What a bunch of a-holes" is the verdict from his colleague.
After this clip was shown, the cast came out. Consisting of director James Gunn, Michael Rooker (Yondu), Karen Gillan (Nebula); Djimon Hounsou (Korath); Lee Pace (Ronan The Accuser); Benicio del Toro (The Collector); Dave Bautista (Drax The Destroyer); Zoe Saldana (Gamora) and the man of 2014, Chris Pratt (Star-Lord).

Funny man Chris Pratt reacted to his slimming down for the role: "I just happened to get a tape worm so it was great timing. No, I got the role six months ago and luckily they trusted me to lose weight. I can't tell you a lot. I can tell you that I'm a FedEx executive who goes down in a crash and lands on an island; Batista plays the volleyball. Wait, no, that's Castaway."

Zoe Saldana spoke about her role, "I've been blue once, so why not try green? I love being in space, I love being challenged by great roles. I play an assassin from space!"

The biggest reveal of the night was Doctor Who star Karen Gillian explaining how she has got into the role of Nebula. Gillian has shaved her head, as Nebula is bald. "I was a little worried that I was going to look like an overgrown fetus, but it's liberating."

The more I hear about Guardians of the Galaxy, the more my heart can't wait for it. With the exception of The Avengers, Marvel films are lone superhero outings, but Guardians of the Galaxy, focusing on a group of heroes, is going to be a fanboy's dream and I'm sure a winner for Marvel.

Guardians of the Galaxy is due August 2014.

  1. I just watched the whole Marvel panel on youtube. Don't really care about Captain America 2, but oh maaaan, can't wait for Guardians!!! It sounds more and more and more awesome with each tidbits coming out.

By the way, did Marvel just fly the whole Guardians cast from London in just to have them appear for about 20 min on a panel? That's crazy (and unproductive lol)!

Yeah, I watched it yesterday too. Lots of fun! Tom Hiddleston completely killed as Loki!

Gotta disagree there. Cap 2's my most anticipated Marvel film! Although Guardians is creeping up on it fast... Looks awesome!

Haha, yeah. It seems rather a waste of money.. But, hey, it meant we got awesome Comic-Con-y stuff!

  3. Tom Hiddleston really enjoyed himself and his Loki role there! Can't wait to see him again in Thor 2.

Cap 2: I don't know, maybe I've just never been into the first Cap, or maybe I just don't really see him as a superhero. He's just not that exciting to me.

Ditto! Although I hope that this is one of his last times as Loki, I'd rather not get sick of him.

Ah, well that's likely the difference then: Cap 1 was my favourite non-Avengers Phase 1 film!

  5. Really, even more than Iron Man 1? It was my favorite Phase 1 film by a mile, including Avengers.

I did love Iron Man 1. But, aside from the cheesy Red Skull and Cap montage about an hour in, I thought Captain America was pretty fantastic!
