You knew it was coming. Even with the recent denial of the original film directors, there was never any doubt that a sequel to the massive success that was Frozen would arrive one day - and it will arrive sooner than you would've thought. It was confirmed today that Frozen 2 is indeed in development at the Walt Disney Animation Studios.
The announcement was made by CEO of the Walt Disney Company Bob Iger at a Disney shareholder meeting. Here is the official press release:
Winter weather ahead! Frozen 2 is officially in development at Walt Disney Animation Studios with directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and producer Peter Del Vecho, the Oscar®-winning filmmaking team behind Frozen. The news was announced at Disney’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders this morning by Bob Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company; John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios; and actor Josh Gad, who provides the voice of Olaf from Frozen. “We enjoyed making Frozen Fever so much and being back in that world with those characters,” said John Lasseter. “Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.” A release date and production details are yet to be announced.Basically, the only thing this press release tells us is that the team behind the first film will be back, so there are reasons to be optimistic about this sequel.
That being said, it's a wonder how Frozen, which was very much a stand-alone story, gets a sequel and a film like Wreck-It Ralph, for which a sequel has been rumoured but never confirmed, still doesn't officially have a follow-up in the works. Yet it seemed like the universe of the Rich Moore film had many more stories to tell.
Only time will tell if Frozen 2 is a good move from the Mouse House.
